I guess I’m in a trend of looking at the fourth studio album of artists for analysis with The Music Bechdel. Just like the last album analyzed, Red by Taylor Swift, Up! is Shania Twain’s fourth studio album released on November 19, 2002. It debuted in the US at number 1, selling approximately 874,000 copies. Her most recent album, Now, was released in 2017, 15 years later.

Does Up! by Shania Twain pass the Music Bechdel?
Almost. One more song about something other than a man and it would have passed. I don’t think I’ve ever listened to Up! all the way through and I really enjoyed it. Most of the songs I hadn’t heard yet are the ones that passed the Music Bechdel, not surprising since radio DJs love playing love songs. What is that about sex selling? Give this album a listen if you haven’t, it’s a good one.
